The award-winning Jeep Renegade will be among a raft of vehicles from the iconic 4x4 manufacturer to be seen on '999' emergency duty in Italian resorts this summer.

The Renegade, which has scooped several accolades, including 4x4 Magazine's '4x4 of the Year', is among a fleet of Jeep SUVs converted into rescue and emergency vehicles deployed nationwide across Italy this summer in various holiday resorts and travel destinations.

Last year, the Renegade was introduced by the Italian Police Force - specifically the Carabinieri - the Guardia di Finanza, the Fire Brigade and the State Police, and will offer reassurance to UK and European tourists and Italian motorists this summer.

Jeep vehicles with a special medical car conversion are currently being used by the Red Cross in Italy and reassert the ability of a Jeep 4x4 to be the first on the scene in the hardest-to-reach corners of the country in case of natural or man-made disaster. And many Jeep SUVs have been employed for special tasks across Europe by government bodies and private businesses.

The vocation for rescue and emergency services is firmly rooted in the 1941 Willys-Overland MA/MB, forerunner of today's models and an ageless symbol of freedom which, during World War II, became an invincible relief vehicle.

The tradition continued in the United States, with the Siebert Ambulance in 1951, the Jeep Light Duty Rescue Truck in 1960 and the Jeep Fire engine built on a CJ-5 in 1960.

Today Jeep vehicles including Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Renegade are employed for rescue and emergency services in Italy, Germany, Spain and the UK, where Renegade is being used as a surveillance vehicle and Grand Cherokee is employed as Ground Control support to UK airport fire command services.
